ALEPH Presents at Welcoming Synagogues Conference in New York

On Monday, February 23, ALEPH Executive Director Debra Kolodny spoke to a trans-denominational gathering about Jewish Renewal’s path breaking work in fully integrating gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender peoples in our policies, communities, programs, seminary and leadership.

The conference was organized by the Welcoming Synagogues Project, a partnership between Jewish Mosaic and the Institute for Judaism and Sexual Orientation at Hebrew Union College’s Jewish Institute of Religion. The goals of the event were to:

1) Familiarize a broad cross-section of communal leaders and activists with findings from new research on inclusion, general research on congregational vitality and change; and other religious denominations’ work on creating LGBT welcoming movements

2) Create a set of best practices in the realm of LGBT inclusion informed by insights from our research and the latest developments in the field which are also scalable for differential denominational implementation

3) Identify potential congregational leaders/synagogues that want to work as pilot sites to implement inclusive change processes and others to disseminate the educational and training tools that are developed out of the project

Ms. Kolodny said of the event, “It was an honor and a pleasure to speak to a gathering of leaders from across the Jewish spectrum who took the critical task of honoring the holiness in each of us so seriously. Kol ha kavod to conference organizers for launching their extensive study on this topic and for hosting a discussion on the preliminary findings. I look forward to the formal release of the study and to further conversations about opening the welcome of synagogues and other Jewish institutions. I was delighted to see the success of Jewish Renewal communities in this arena discussed by the researchers. I look forward to our movement being a resource for the entire Jewish world, helping others learn about some best practices in serving, honoring and delighting in the gifts of Jews of all sexual orientations and gender identities.”
