ALEPH Participates in National Religious Coalition on Creation Care Washington Week

On Monday, February 22 ALEPH Executive Director Debra Kolodny and ALEPH Rabbinic Pastor De Herman attended a prayer breakfast launching the National Religious Coalition on Creation Care’s annual visit to Washington. They joined faith leaders from around the country, adding ALEPH’s voice to those taking a stand urging immediate and effective action to stop global climate change and protect our nation’s forests and creatures.

Catholics and Jews, Evangelicals, Orthodox and Mainline Protestants gathered with one mind, preaching messages of simplicity, ethical, moral and religious responsibility to the Earth, deploying alternatives to fossil fuels and most of all, the urgency to act today.

Dr. James Hansen, Nobel Prize winner in Climate of the NASA Goddard Space Institute was presented with the Steward of God’s Creation award for his courage and resolution in the face of great opposition. Dr. Hansen was unequivocal in his message that the science was irrefutable regarding climate change and that none of us could afford to sit idly by at this critical moment in time.

Members of the gathering met with White House representatives, Administration offices like NOAA, USDA, USE and the USFS as well as Congressional Representatives and Senators.

This is the 12th year that Christian and Jewish organizational leaders have prayed, spoken and lobbied together for the health and wellbeing of God’s creation, each armed with the statements and policies of their own religious institutions.

Over the years since this ministry began, many religious organizations and groups have participated in these interfaith activities. Among the various organizations are the National Catholic Rural Life Conference, the National Council of Churches, the American Baptist Churches USA; the Social Action Committee of Reformed Judaism; the Evangelical Environmental Network; Roman Catholic Franciscans, Christians Caring for Creation; the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Earth Care, and the Central Conference of American Rabbis; among many dozens of others.
