Regional News from ADL Mayor Hickenlooper, Superintendent Bennett Unveil ADL's Updated, Expanded 2006-2007 Positive Impact! Tools for Respecting Differences Now Available ONLINE at www.ADL.org/Denver Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and the Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, Michael Bennett, unveiled ADL's updated and expanded 2006-2007 Positive Impact! Tools for Respecting Differences on Monday, January 30 on the Esplanade outside East High School. The free guide, designed for use in schools, community organizations, places of worship and the home, provides exercises, approaches, ideas, and tools for creating a community that rejects prejudice and hate and embraces our diversity. "Colorado's diversity is one of its greatest assets and Positive Impact! is a wonderful resource because it contains basic information that kids and adults can use," Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper said. "Parents need to talk about diversity and tolerance with their children because children who respect themselves, respect others," he said. "Positive Impacts!'s Resolution of Respect, on page 24, says it all - 'I firmly believe that one person can make a difference and that no person can be an "innocent" bystander when it comes to opposing hate.' "We are grateful to have this wonderful tool," Mayor Hickenlooper said. "The richness of Denver Public Schools is its diversity," Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennett said. "It is important that we respect diversity and honor each other as we prepare our students to be leaders in the 21st century." ADL's Mountain States Regional Director Bruce H. DeBoskey said, "With a staff of 10, hundreds of volunteers and thousands of supporters, ADL fights every day to stamp out anti-Semitism, racism, and all forms of bigotry, and to preserve the core values of our democracy such as religious freedom." "Perspectives on Stereotyping" explains the steps associated with developing stereotypes. "How Can I Create a Just Society?" is a six-step exercise that creates ideas for social action, and "Guidelines for Challenging Racism and Other Forms of Oppression" provides 12 ways one can confront discrimination. In addition to information on hate crimes, an updated "101 Ways to Make a Positive Impact in Your Community! and list of cultural and religious observances, the 2006-2007 edition of Positive Impact! includes a list of definitions and the "Resolution of Respect" in both Spanish and English. ADL Sponsors Viewing and Discussion of "Protocols of Zion" As part of the Mellon Financial 10th Annual Denver Jewish Film Festival, ADL is sponsoring a showing of the "Protocols of Zion," a 90-minute film by Marc Levin that explores anti-Semitism in the wake of 9/11, on Monday, February 13 at 7 p.m. at the Mizel Center for Arts and Culture, 350 S. Dahlia. Purportedly a record of the Jewish plan for world domination, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion was actually written by the Tsarist secret police a century ago. Henry Ford and the Ku Klux Klan promulgated the Protocols, and they haven't gone away-until recently, copies were sold at Wal-Mart. Although the origin of the Protocols was exposed in 1921, the document continues to fuel racists and hate-mongers. Levin engages in a free-for-all dialogue with Arab Americans, Black nationalists, Christian evangelists, white supremacists, Kabbalist rabbis, Holocaust survivors, and the founder of the popular Jew Watch web site. After the screening, ADL's Regional Director, Bruce H. DeBoskey, will facilitate a discussion about the film. General admission tickets are $8 and student and senior tickets are $6. To buy tickets, contact the Mizel Center for Arts & Culture at 303-316-6360.
