Haver: Boulder Rabbinic Council presents
Special Sukkot Showing of “An Inconvenient Truth”
“See to it that you do not destroy my world, for there is no one to repair it after you.” Midrash Ecclesiastes Rabbah 7:13
Sukkot is a time when we honor our interdependency with nature.  What more fitting time than Sukkot to educate ourselves about the global climate crisis humanity now faces.  If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction due to global warming.  Global warming is already having devastating impacts in various parts of the planet. Join the Boulder-area Jewish congregations as we view the much lauded film, “An Inconvenient Truth,” Monday, Oct. 9, 6:30 p.m. at the Boulder JCC. The film offers a passionate and inspirational look at Al Gore’s fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it.  Following the film, there will be a presentation and discussion of what practical steps we can take as individuals and a community to begin to reverse this trend and live more responsibly.  Snacks will be available in the Sukkah. Cost:  $5 donation requested. Contact:
Kathryn@boulderjcc.org or (303) 998-1021.

Illegal Immigration: How New Laws Will Shape the Future of America – Pre-election Panel moderated by State Representative Paul Weissman

Colorado may be a non-border state, but many of our politicians are leading the drive for immigration changes nationwide – on both sides of the issue. Paul was elected to the Colorado State House in 2002 serving the 12th District. In the House, Paul represents Louisville, Lafayette, and part of Longmont. He serves on the State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee, the Health, Environment, Welfare, and Institutions Committee, and the Appropriations Committee. Paul continues to work at the Blue Parrot Restaurant in Downtown Louisville as a bartender and manager where he's been since 1989. Paul is also a substitute teacher in the Denver Public Schools. Cost: $6 for Boulder JCC members; $8 for non-members. Contact: (303) 998-1021 or email kathryn@boulderjcc.org

In the stories of 12 historically noted but little known individuals who, between the years 1492 ad 1967, were forced into exile, Levine describes expulsions and scandals, false messiahs and the first ghetto, assassinations, blood libels, the learning and wealth that sprung up in distant cities, and some devastating reversals of fortune. Hillel at CU Shabbat Chaverim

Hillel at CU is partnering with the larger Boulder community with Shabbat Chaverim – Shabbat with Friends. During the semester, the students on campus become so involved in their studies and their multitude of extracurricular activities that they are looking for a place to unwind, taste a home cooked meal, and feel the serenity of Shabbat. It is a chance for the Boulder community to open their homes to students on Friday night and together with family and friends welcome the Sabbath.  CU Hillel is seeking diverse Jewish families who celebrate Shabbat dinner to open their homes to Jewish CU students and Hillel at CU will match students with different levels of observance and Kashrut standards.  If you are interested in hosting a few students during the semester, please call Rabbi Adam Naftalin-Kelman at Hillel at (303) 442-6571.

Boulder International Humanist Institute presents
Author Sam Harris

The Boulder International Humanist Institute (BIHI) is bringing NY Times Sam Harris, best-selling author of Letter to a Christian Nation, to Boulder for his only Colorado appearance on Oct 10, at the Stadium Club at Folsom Field, University of Colorado.  Humanism has had great support among the Jewish community. Rabbi Mortikiah Kaplan, founder of the Jewish Reconstruction movement, was one of the original signers of the Humanist manifesto in 1933. Rabbi Sherwin Wine founded the Humanistic Judaism movement and started a congregation in Denver. Harris' his first book, The End of Faith - Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason, offered a vivid history of our willingness to suspend reason in favor of religious beliefs - even when these beliefs inspire violence. He received thousands of letters from Christians excoriating him for suggesting that passages from sacred books, when taken literally are not the best moral guides and encourage terrorism. His second book and topic of the evening's event, Letter to a Christian Nation is his powerful reply. Cost: $7 advance online; $10 door cash/check only. Students free with valid ID. Free Parking. Ticket information is available at www.BIHI.info.
