About Joshua Nelson:

In the 17 years since Joshua Nelson first sang along with a Mahalia Jackson album he discovered in his grandparents' home when he was eight-years-old, he has spread the sheer joy of spiritual music to audiences from New Jersey to Jerusalem and throughout the world. Joshua, whose voice bears a remarkable resemblance to that of the late Ms. Jackson, has performed in concert halls, synagogues, churches, and at various outdoor venues, both solo and with such musical luminaries as Wynton Marsalis, Billy Preston, Aretha Franklin, and Stephanie Mills; Gospel greats Albertina Walker, the Barret Sisters, Hezekiah Walker, Kirk Franklin, Dottie Peoples, Dorothy Norwood, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Reverend Timothy Wright, and Bobby Jones & New Life, The Klezmatics and late jazz greats Cab Calloway and Dizzy Gillespie, among others. His cultural and religious background and extensive travels through Israel influenced him to pioneer a new form of music he has termed KOSHER-GOSPEL MUSIC - Hebrew/Jewish music with a soul feeling. Growing up in a black Jewish synagogue, Joshua decided to take the soul Hebrew sounds prominent in many black synagogues and take them to the outside world, blending Jewish Liturgical and African American musical styles. Through his unique talent, Electrifying performances and profound commitment to spiritual music, Joshua is transforming new listeners everywhere. “I want to let people hear it and realize that it is not just good to listen to - it is good for the soul."

Most Recently, Joshua embarked on an extensive European tour that included stops in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Holland, and Germany, where he performed to standing-room-only audiences. He toured Israel (performing in perfect Hebrew as well as English), and had the opportunity to sing "Hatikvah," the Israeli national anthem, at Binyanei Ha'uma Hall in Jerusalem for an audience that included the Prime Minister of Israel.

HaSifria January Book Club:

The History of Love by Nicole Krauss

Join HaSifria for the January Book Club selection, The History of Love by Nicole Krauss, Wednesday, January 17, noon-1:30 p.m. at the Boulder JCC. Leo Gursky is an old man defined by his loneliness, but before the war, he fell in love and wrote a book. Although he doesn’t know it, that book also survived, crossed an ocean, and changed lives. Fourteen-year-old Alma Singer was named after a character in the book. She has her hands full trying to care for her depressed mother and her little brother who believes he may be the messiah. As the connection between Gursky and Singer is revealed, so is the potential for salvation - or despair. Krauss’s poetic prose and finely drawn characters make this a memorable book. A Publishers Weekly starred review. You bring a dairy or pareve lunch and we’ll provide drinks and dessert. Contact Froma@boulderjcc.org or (303) 998-1900, ext. 5 for more information.

Menorah – Talking Pictures Film Series

Marching with King: “Abraham Joshua Heschel Remembered”

Join Menorah – Talking Pictures Film Series for Marching with King: “Abraham Joshua Heschel Remembered,” a short film followed by personal reflections by speakers Rabbi Victor Gross and Rabbi Gavriel Goldfeder, Saturday, January 20, 7p.m. at the Boulder JCC. A refugee from Germany who became professor of Jewish ethics and mysticism at the Jewish Theological Seminary, the late Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel combined deep scholarship with a strong moral passion which led him to march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to oppose the Vietnam War. The 60-minute documentary “Abraham Joshua Heschel Remembered” begins with a discussion by scholars Ismar Schorsch and Cornel West, who focus on Heschel's efforts regarding Black-Jewish relations. In an interview filmed shortly before his death in 1972, Heschel defined humanity's deepest passion as "a craving for the meaning of existence." Rabbi Victor Gross was a student of Professor Heschel in the late 60's and had a personal  relationship with him and his family and paid a partial debt to his influence by writing his Ph.D. on him. Rabbi Gavriel Goldfeder was also deeply influenced by Heschel’s teachings. RSVP to Kathryn@boulderjcc.org or (303) 998-1021.
