Boulder JCC Art Exhibit
Ayal Hausfeld
Art for Life’s Sake
Join the Boulder JCC for a “Meet the Artist”
wine and cheese reception for the opening of Ayal Hausfeld’s exhibit,
“Art for Art’s Sake,” Sunday,
May 6, 6-7 p.m., at the Boulder JCC. Ayal’s artistic education
began in elementary school with Sunday trips to the local art student's league
and more than three years of high school study in Italy, and led to a BFA from
the Rhode Island School of Design and a MA in Art Therapy and Counseling from Naropa
University. His work includes Judaica, fine art, calligraphy, ketubot, and
graphic design. “My approach to art
making both personally and professionally is based up on the idea that the
creative process in and of itself has enormous potential to heal our fragmented
parts, integrate life changes and bring meaningful attention to our existence.
In my individual work, I most often begin a painting by letting go of any rigid
notion of what I think the outcome should be. My aim is to gradually quiet the mind
and permit "the still, small voice" within to surface.”
The reception will be immediately followed by Menorah’s screening
of “From Swastika to Jim Crow” at 7 p.m.

Menorah Talking Pictures
“From Swastika to Jim Crow”
Join Menorah’s Talking Picture series for a
screening of “From Swastika to Jim Crow,” Sunday, May 6, 7 p.m. at the Boulder JCC. Immediately after
Hitler took power in 1933, Jewish professors were expelled from German
universities. Many of them fled to America. But times were tough in
the U.S.,
where anti-Semitism was rife in academe. Thus, some refugee scholars ended up
in an unlikely setting: the black segregated colleges of the Deep
South, where they mentored, supported and forged lasting
relationships with their black students, all the while contributing to the
growing civil rights movement. Through interviews with professors, their
colleagues and students, this fascinating documentary relates a little-known
chapter in Jewish-Black relations and reveals the ease with which the German
Jews became “color blind,” the seriousness—and
gratitude—with which they accepted their jobs, and the enduring affection
and appreciation that is their legacy. Cost:
$5/Boulder JCC members; $6/non-members. RSVP

Older Adults – Not Just For Seniors
How to Save Your Own Life
With Carol Salter, Co-director of the Grillo Health
Information Center
Join Older Adults – Not Just for Seniors for
“How To Save Your Own Life” with Carol Salter, Wednesday, May 9, noon at the Boulder JCC.
When Virgil Grillo was coping with cancer, the CU professor engaged in
extensive research on the disease and his options. Before his death, he
envisioned a comfortable place where people could come and, with assistance
from trained researchers, could research and access information so that they
would be better informed about their own health and health care needs. The Virgil Grillo
Health Information
Center was established in
1998 at the Boulder Public Library to honor this vision. Since that time, many
users believe the center has saved their life. Come find out how you can
benefit from this invaluable community resource. Cost: $5 for talk and lunch.

One of the most influential rabbis of the 20th
century, Abraham Joshua Heschel may be best known for marching with Martin
Luther King – the subject of Menorah’s January program, which left
many who attended longing to learn more. Indeed, there’s much more to
Heschel than social activism. Come learn more about this great scholar,
theologian, writer and teacher from one of his students, Rabbi Victor Gross. Rabbi Victor Gross was a student of Professor Heschel
in the late 60's and had a personal relationship with him and his family
and paid a partial debt to his influence by writing his Ph.D. on him.

Metro Denver/Boulder Jewish Community Study Update:
Thank you for your support thus far to the 2007 Metro
Denver/Boulder Jewish Community Study. Many of you have supported the study
by attending the input sessions in November and December, by helping to market the study through your
organizations' newsletters and e-newsletters, and sharing your membership lists
which are being used to randomly select households for the telephone survey.
The survey instrument is complete, and the phones have started to ring
across the 7-county area. If your phone rings, please participate in the
survey. Please tell your friends, colleagues and members to do the
same. The more people who answer the phone and participate in the
interviews, the more efficient the survey.
*
Some of you have offered to put a link to the web-page about the survey on your
website. Thank you! If you are willing to do so, please reply and
notify Maggie Miller at maggiemiller1@comcast.net
– (please note the "1" ) or phone 303-886-5116 and
Maggie will follow up with you.
*
If someone gets a call from an interviewer and is suspicious of it, please call
303-316-6340 to find out more about
the survey.
*
FYI, the survey contains questions about: where people live and have lived...in
what ways they consider themselves Jewish...who lives in their
household...their employment and education...how their children are being
raised and educated...what they do for fun...what they do that's Jewish...what
obstacles have prevented them from engaging in Jewish activities...what support
resources they use or seek...how they give...and more. The survey
represents the input that was received from you last fall, and months of work
by the Steering Committee. (A full copy of the survey will be made public this
fall.)
*
As we mentioned last fall, research-into-action is a top priority of this
study. Three R&D teams will be launching in the next three
months. Their foci are: (a) Young Adults: Jewish Connections/Engagement
(b) Boomers: Jewish Connections/Engagement and Social Support Needs (c)
Growth and Dispersion: Implications for Jewish Communal Life in Colorado . The
tasks of each team will include: developing a research plan, analyzing survey
data, researching models of best practices locally and nationally, identifying
areas for qualitative research and overseeing that research, meeting with
relevant community and agency leaders to discuss ways to use the data to
implement programs, and developing an implementation and action plan.
This work will begin now, and extend through the rest of the year. I will
keep you updated about that. In the meantime, if you and your
organization have particular interest in any of these areas, please let me
know.
*
Please update your boards about the Study. It would be most helpful to put
the word out. Please use this email for your speaking points, and if you
have any questions or clarifications, please contact maggie@maggiemiller.org or
phone at 303-886-5116.
Thank
you again for your support of the Community Study.
