“Driving Miss Daisy” (1989)
Directed
by Bruce Beresford
Starring Jessica Tandy, Morgan Freeman, Dan Aykroyd
When Daisy Werthan and
her chauffeur Hoke are pulled over in rural Alabama in the late 1950s, the suspicious
Southern police officers check their identification and send them on their way.
"There goes an old nigger and an old Jew woman," one of the rednecks
sneers to the other as they drive off. "That's one sorry sight." The
story of the unlikely friendship that develops over the course of 25 years
between a genteel Southern matron (Jessica Tandy) and her loyal employee
(Morgan Freeman), "Driving Miss Daisy" examines the uneasy
relationship between members of two persecuted minorities, a complex, tricky
subject not often explored in film. Alfred Uhry loosely based his three-person
play on his own grandmother her chauffeur and his critically acclaimed screen
adaptation won an Oscar for best picture while Tandy won her first acting Oscar
- at the age of 80.

Older Adults – Not Just for Seniors
“The Forgotten Refugees”
Join Older Adults – Not Just for Seniors for a short
film, “The Forgotten Refugees,” and a panel discussion Wednesday, June 13, Noon at the Boulder JCC.
Director Michael Grynszpan documents a civilization that took 16 centuries to
grow to a million souls, and just a few decades to whither to nearly none. In
1945 there were up to one million Jews living in the Middle East and North Africa outside the Palestine Mandate - many living
in communities dating back more than three millennia. Today, there are several
thousand. Who are these Jews? What precipitated their mass-exodus in the 20th
century? Where did they go? And why don't we know their
stories? Cost: $6 for film, talk and lunch. RSVP: Kathryn@boulderjcc.org, (303)
998-1021.

Chai Tech: Stilling the Mind, Opening the
Heart- Where Science Meets Spirituality
With Adam Engle at the City Club
Does meditation cause changes in the brain? How are
thought and feeling connected? Is the ability to focus something that can be
improved through practice like playing an instrument? Join us as Adam Engle
talks about the research being done by the Mind and Life Institute of Boulder,
which is pioneering a new field known as contemplative neuroscience, inspired
by a dialogue Engle organized between neuroscientists and the Dalai Lama at his
home in Dharamsala, India, in 2000, Tuesday,
June 19, 7 p.m. at the City Club, 885
Arapahoe Avenue, Boulder. The Dalai Lama asked the scientists
to take the practices developed by Buddhists and other contemplative traditions
and test them in labs, and, if they were determined to be beneficial, to see if
there were ways to teach them in secular environments. Cost: $10 for talk and
wine and cheese reception. RSVP to Kathryn@boulderjcc.org, (303)
998-1021.

Menorah Talking Pictures
“Yippee:
A Journey to Jewish Joy”
Join Menorah Talking Pictures for “Yippee: A Journey
to Jewish Joy,” Sunday, June 24, 7 p.m.
at the Boulder
JCC. When director Paul Mazursky (“Next Stop Greenwich
Village,” “An Unmarried Woman,” “Down and Out in
Beverly Hills,” “Enemies: A Love Story”), was told (by his
optometrist) that 25,000—mostly Hassidic—Jews from around the world
were expected to visit a small town in Ukraine for three days of praying,
singing, and dancing, he felt compelled to make the journey himself.
“Yippee” chronicles the award-winning filmmaker, actor, and
scriptwriter’s whirlwind journey to Uman, the site of a unique, annual
gathering of Jewish men making pilgrimages to the burial place of Rabbi Nachman
(1772-1810). The adventure culminates on the evening of Rosh Hashanah in a mass
expression of spiritual ecstasy. “Yippee” is an infectious road
movie filled with electricity and awe and Mazursky is a splendid guide, funny,
curious, and generous. Cost: $5 for Boulder JCC members: $6 for
non-members. RSVP: Kathryn@boulderjcc.org, (303)
998-1021.

Jewish Community Study Update
Interviews continue across the 7-counties of Metro Denver/Boulder
for the 2007 Jewish Community Study. A total of 1,400 calls will be made
when the survey process is complete. People whose names have been
randomly selected and who have given interviews say they found the process
interesting and enjoyable. They can feel confident that they have
provided information which will help the Jewish community. This summer,
three Research and Development Teams of the Study will be conducting focus
groups and online surveys to learn more in-depth about the attitudes and needs
of young adults, baby boomers, and those who live in areas not typically served
by Jewish programming. Stay tuned; Study results will be available in
October. INFORMATION: www.jewishcolorado.org/2007study. The
study is being conducted by Ukeles Associates, Inc., managed by Allied Jewish
