Maimonides Wellness Center
“Beauty Mark”

Film and discussion about the relationship between women, body image, and athletics

With filmmaker Diane Israel in Person!

Join Maimonides Wellness Center for a screening and discussion of “Beauty Mark,” about the relationship between women, body image and athletics with filmmaker Diane Israel in person, Thursday, July 19, 7 p.m. at the Boulder JCC. Using the body and how we feel about it as a metaphor for self-worth, Diane Israel takes us on a race through her childhood and into the recesses of our hearts to unearth what is beautiful and worth living for.  She uses her unique perspective as a former champion athlete whose body and mind spiraled out of control to unravel her story while taking us on a quest, through interviews with the young and old, with divergent backgrounds, to show us the essence of our pain and the road to our enlightened state. “Beauty Mark” features interviews with the playwright Eve Ensler, feminist Naomi Wolf, journalist Jane Brody and elite runner Ellen Hart Pena. Its aim, Israel says, is to "create a healthier culture around what beauty is." An elite runner and triathlete until age 28, Diane Israel won the Pikes Peak Marathon and several other major races after settling in Colorado in the early 1980s.  She retired from competition after collapsing from athletic bulimia, but continues to run and live her life at a less frantic pace.  Israel went back to school to become a psychotherapist and teaches at Naropa University.  She also co-owns the Gyrotonic Boulder fitness studio and helps lead retreats for Women's Quest, a Boulder-based self-discovery program for women. Cost: $6/Boulder JCC members, $8/non-members. RSVP: Kathryn@boulderjcc.org, 303-998-1021.

Jewish Community Study Update
Interviews continue across the 7-counties of Metro Denver/Boulder for the 2007 Jewish Community Study.  A total of 1,400 calls will be made when the survey process is complete.  People whose names have been randomly selected and who have given interviews say they found the process interesting and enjoyable.  They can feel confident that they have provided information which will help the Jewish community.  This summer, three Research and Development Teams of the Study will be conducting focus groups and online surveys to learn more in-depth about the attitudes and needs of young adults, baby boomers, and those who live in areas not typically served by Jewish programming.  Stay tuned; Study results will be available in October.  INFORMATION: www.jewishcolorado.org/2007study. The study is being conducted by Ukeles Associates, Inc., managed by Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado, and is made possible primarily through a generous grant from Rose Community Foundation.
