A nebbishy loan manager at the Hebrew National Bank, Sheldon Kasner is an unlikely criminal - Woody Allen miscast in "Goodfellas." A comic and thoroughly Jewish thriller, "Burial Society" finds Sheldon on the lam from mobsters. Relying on brains to outwit the brawny thugs on his trail, Sheldon infiltrates the mysterious world of the Chevrah Kaddisha (the Jewish society that prepares bodies for burial according to ancient ritual) in order to steal a body and fake his own death. But having sought and found refuge within this ancient religious society, Sheldon finds himself captivated by this unusual and powerful world and the three old men who run it.

A nifty little thriller... like a Coen Brothers-style neo-noir with an extra serving of matzoh." - The Eye Weekly (Toronto)

A favorite on the Jewish film festival circuit, this snappy, smart and heart-warming new comedy stars Peter Falk at his eccentric, flamboyant best as Morris Applebaum, a feisty retired thespian with deep roots in Broadway theater. On the eve of his 90th birthday, Morris invites his three middle-aged children back to his stylish apartment for the party of a lifetime. As a postscript, Morris informs them that after the party he plans to bring the curtain down on himself and make his "final exit." Flying in from all parts of the country, his children converge on their father's home to try and convince him that life is still worth living. Based on the Broadway play by Allen Swift, this witty film paints an affectionate portrait of an enduring and endearing Jewish family.

Sunday, February 18

At the Boulder JCC

Cost: $6 per film or $15 for all three films

Discussion following each film

RSVP: Kathryn@boulderjcc.org or (303) 998-1021

Join us for three premieres from the festival's schedule of exciting new Jewish films

"The Gefilte Fish Chronicles"

Director: David Burnett

USA/2006/56 minutes

Sunday, February 18, 4 p.m.

World Premiere!

The descendants of Russian immigrants, Abe and Minnie Dubroff still celebrate Passover together, a century later, in Newburgh, N.Y. Tap your toes to an irresistible klezmer soundtrack as "Pesach Machers" Sophie, Peppy and Rosie lead a six-week preparation process culminating in a seder that's a lot like seders worldwide — only much bigger. "I've heard it said many times, and it's the truth: The family that sits around the table together, stays together. And we have many tables," Peppy says.

"The Forgotten Refugees"

Director: Michael Grynszpan

USA/Israel/2005/49 minutes

Sunday, Feb. 18, 6:30 p.m.

Colorado Premiere!

In the 1920s, Baghdad was nearly 40 percent Jewish, "the New York City of the Middle East." Egypt's constitution was drafted by a Jew. In 1945 there were up to one million Jews living in the Middle East and North Africa outside the Palestine Mandate - many living in communities dating back more than three millennia. Today, there are several thousand. Who are these Jews? What precipitated their mass-exodus in the 20th century? Where did they go? And why don't we know their stories? Director Michael Grynszpan documents a civilization that took 16 centuries to grow to a million souls, and just a few decades to whither to nearly none.

"King of Beggars"

Director: Uri Paster

Israel

2006/98 minutes

Hebrew with English subtitles

Sunday, Feb. 18, 8 p.m.

Colorado premiere.

Part samurai, part savior, Fishke is a bathhouse attendant in a late 16th-Century Russian shtetl who becomes the leader of a fighting brigade of Jewish outcasts. Based on the character of Fishke der Krumer (Fishke the Lame) created by the great Hebrew and Yiddish writer Mendele Mocher Sforim, the hero struggles against both a divided Jewish community and his Russian military masters, setting up a metaphor for the Jewish people's relationship with each other and the rest of the world, then and now. "King of Beggars" asks whether a new Jewish identity — one of a free people who believe in peace and coexistence — is attainable.

Julius Lester, Lovesong

Wednesday, February 21, noon-1:30 p.m.

At the Boulder JCC North Wing

Contact: Froma@boulderjcc.org or (303) 998-1900, ext. 5.

"Well-known author, academic, and former civil rights activist Lester takes the reader on an extraordinary spiritual odyssey that starts in the Forties with his childhood in segregated Nashville; continues through his years of avowed atheism and civil rights work, with accusations of anti-Semitism by whites and betrayal by blacks; and concludes with his conversion to Judaism. His search for meaning and faith lead him to Thomas Merton, Wounded Knee, and Protestant sources; his early discovery that his grandfather was Jewish eventually sparks his search for a Jewish identity. The path to conversion is difficult, but the resulting "lovesong" to God is powerful and beautifully written." - Library Journal:

Reel Israel: The Israel Center at the Boulder JCC, Menorah and Congregation Har HaShem present

"Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi"

(2003)

Written and directed by Shemi Zarhin

Starring Oshri Cohen

Saturday, February 24, 7 p.m.

At the Boulder JCC

Suggested donation $5

An Israeli "Good Will Hunting," this feel-good movie details the plight of an unassuming teen (the bright-eyed Oshri Cohen) and the machinations necessary to reveal his hidden genius. Shemi Zarhin, one of Israel's few female writer-directors, explores Sephardic family life in her tender and insightful portrait of an adolescent having trouble seeing his true worth. Feeling unloved by his mother and alone at school, Shlomi overcompensates with his service of others and has nothing left when it comes to developing his own unique talents. The comic drama conveys the challenges that overtake this quiet and sensitive youth as he begins to bloom and open up to the positive forces that are liberating him.

"This is the simplest and sweetest of films, punctuated by several exceptional performances (especially lead actor Oshri Cohen) and just the right mixture of humor and pathos." - Tim Cogshell, Boxoffice.com
