2007 "Society of Fellows" Donor Luncheon on Nov. 5

ADL to Honor Barry Curtiss-Lusher

ADL's 2007 "Society of Fellows" Donor Luncheon will be on Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The annual event recognizes donors who have given $500 or more to support the Mountain States Regional Office.

This year, Muslim activist Irshad Manji will discuss "The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith." ADL Board member, National Executive Committee member, National Development Chair and former Mountain States Board Chair Barry Curtiss-Lusher also will receive ADL's Distinguished Community Service Award for his commitment to human rights and dignity, and his dedicated service to his community, state and nation.

In 2005, Manji released the international bestseller, The Trouble with Islam Today: A Muslim's Call for Reform in Her Faith, an open letter to the worldwide community about why her faith needs to come to terms with the diversity of ideas, beliefs and people in the world, and why non-Muslims have a pivotal role in helping them get there. She

has since launched Project Ijtihad, an initiative to develop the world's first leadership network for reform-minded Muslims. In August, PBS aired the documentary "Faith Without Fear" which followed Manji through her personal and spiritual journal to reconcile her faith and love of freedom.

ADL's Annual Campaign Chairs are Board members Susan Brody, David Gabriel, and Laura Merage, and ADL's Development Co-Chairs are Dan Calisher and Andrea Shpall.

ADL donors who have given $500 or more in the 2007 campaign are invited to attend the lunch at no charge, and can bring a guest for $50. To RSVP or for more information, contact Amy at 303-830-7177 ext. 220 or aheller@ADL.org.

2008 Robert B. Sturm Youth Leadership Mission to Visit Yad Vashem

Applications available Sept. 7th, Due Sept. 28th

In honor of the 55th anniversary of Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, ADL's 2008 Robert B. Sturm Youth Leadership Mission will take 20 Colorado and Nebraska sophomores and junior high school students to Israel for a week this spring.

For the past nine years, local businessman Robert B. Sturm has underwritten ADL's mission that helps motivate high school students to fight prejudice in their lives, schools and communities by applying the lessons of the Holocaust to modern-day issues of bigotry.

During the March 31-April 6, 2008 trip, participants will tour and study at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority that documents the history of the Jewish people during the Holocaust and preserves the memory and story of each of the six million victims in its archives, library, school, and museums to impart the lessons of the Holocaust for generations to come. The students also will tour Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and meet with Israeli elected officials.

After returning, the students will participate in a year-long program to collectively develop a project that teaches their peers the value of diversity and the consequences of hate.

Applications for the 2008 Mission are now available and are due back on Sept. 28th. For an application or additional information, contact Debbie at 303-830-7177 ext. 212 or dcole@ADL.org.

ADL Mourns the Passing of Two Board Members

Rabbi Goldberger

It is with great sadness that ADL mourns the passing of two long-time, dedicated Board members, Dr. Enrique Feldman and Rabbi Daniel Goldberger.

Dr. Feldman was a passionate defender of the Jewish people and Israel. He not only served on ADL's Regional Board, but also served as an ADL National Commissioner. ADL's new Conference Center is dedicated in his honor.

Rabbi Goldberger was a beloved rabbi, friend to many and a community leader. He served on ADL's Board for many years and will be remembered for his many wonderful qualities, including his commitment to social justice, human rights, and the Jewish people.

May their memories serve as a blessing.

2007 Jewish Community Study Update

According to initial results of the 2007 Jewish Community Study, the Metro Denver/Boulder Jewish population has risen by 29% in the past 10 years, and 81,500 Jewish individuals now live in 45,400 households across the seven-county area of Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson.

Metro Denver/Boulder is now the 18th largest Jewish community in the U.S., and is similar in size to established Jewish centers such as Baltimore and Cleveland as well as the growing western U.S. Jewish areas of Phoenix and San Diego.

Since 1997, the geographic changes in the Metro Denver/Boulder area also have been dramatic, especially in South Metro Denver where the number of Jewish households has increased 130%. North and East Metro Denver, which includes Stapleton, Commerce City, Brighton, Northglenn, and Thornton, had a minimal number of Jewish residents in 1997, but now have 2,900 households, representing 6% of the total population.

While Denver is still the largest Jewish area, in 1981 it accounted for 67% of all Denver/Boulder Jewish households, but that percentage declined to 41% in 1997, and again in 2007 to 31%.

Growth in North and West Metro Denver and in Boulder continues: changes between 1981 and 1997 were 314% and 650% in those two sub-areas, and changes between 1997 and 2007 were 22% in both of those areas.  Aurora still accounts for 9% of all Jewish households in the Metro Denver/Boulder area, as it did in 1997.

Additional information from the interviews, including findings related to issues such as poverty, human services, Israel, philanthropy, and Jewish connections in the seven-county area, will be presented in a series of community meetings in November. Formal and grassroots Jewish organizations also will receive support on how best to utilize the Study's results.

The 2007 Metro Denver/Boulder Jewish Community Study is being managed by Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado and is primarily funded through a grant from the Rose Community Foundation, Ukeles Associates has

The study is being co-chaired by Nancy Gart and ADL's Board Chair Rob Klugman. For more information, visit www.jewishcolorado.org/2007study.

DCPA Presents "The Diary of Anne Frank"

This fall, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts is presenting "The Diary of Anne Frank," the poignant chronicle of a Jewish family's claustrophobic years in hiding in an Amsterdam attic, and their ultimate betrayal and execution by the occupying Germans.

Brilliant, witty and wise beyond her years, Anne Frank wrote unsparingly of the foibles and the heroism of herself and the people around her and of her own fragile coming of age. Her diary is an enduring testament of hope amide unthinkable cruelty and despair - "in spite of everything, I believe people are truly good at heart."

Evening and matinee performances are available November 19-December 15 in the Space Theatre. For tickets and more information, call 303-893-4100 or visit www.denvercenter.org.

The Deadliest Lies: Now in Bookstores
Abraham H. Foxman's new book, The Deadliest Lies: The Israel Lobby and the Myth of Jewish Control (Palgrave Macmillan) debunks the persistent anti-Semitic canards that the American Jewish community stifles free speech, has divided loyalties and is responsible for pushing the U.S. into war in Iraq. The book explains how Professors Stephen Walt and John J. Mearsheimer, former President Jimmy Carter and others have lent an alarming veneer of credibility to these false accusations. More

Featured Books for September

This month ADL features three books that explore what it means to be multiracial and help children develop the skills and confidence to challenge ethnic and racial bias.

Hope

Isabell Monk, Janice Lee Porter (Illustrator)

hope

After someone asks whether she's "mixed," second-grader Hope, a biracial child, wonders what that means. Her great aunt assures her that as the child of a white father and an African-American mother, she represents "generations of faith mixed with lots of love." As she listens to Aunt Poogee recount her family's history and the story behind her name, Hope learns to feel proud of her biracial heritage and how to handle questions about her racial status in the future. Grade Level: K to 3.

Cooper's Lesson

Sun Yung Shin, Kim Cogan (Illustrator, Translator)

cooper lesson

This is a story, written in English and Korean, about identity and an intergenerational friendship, between Cooper, who has a Korean mother and a white, American father and a Korean shopkeeper. With his mixed heritage, Cooper doesn't know where he fits in because when he goes to the Korean grocery, he is overwhelmed by a language of which he knows very little. Thinking the owner, Mr. Lee is laughing at him, Cooper shoplifts a brush in retaliation and is caught. While working off his debt, he learns that Mr. Lee's life in the United States has been difficult because of the language barrier, and the man also listens to Cooper's frustrations, and the two come to a better understanding of their own and one another's problems. Grade Level: 3-5

Growing Up Biracial: Trevor's Story

Bethany Kandel, Carol Halebian (Photographer)

trevor's story

Ten-year-old Trevor Sage-el describes his life at home and at school, his feelings about being the son of a white mother and a black father, and what he likes and does not like about being biracial. "Sometimes people ask me, 'What are you?'," observes Trevor. "I usually answer, 'Human.' I have friends of all colors. I don't want to have to choose between black and white. I'm both, and I like it." Grade Level: 2-6.
