ADL's Boulder Office Now Open Full-Time

Amy M. Stein Hired as Boulder Community Coordinator

ADL's Boulder satellite office is now open on a full-time basis and staffed by ADL's new Boulder Community Coordinator Amy M. Stein.

A year ago, ADL's Boulder satellite office opened on a part-time basis after ADL's Boulder Steering Committee worked for four years to bring a formal ADL presence to Boulder. Now, thanks in part to a grant from Rose Community Foundation, the Boulder office is operating full-time and can be reached at 303-449-2607 or astein@ADL.org.

Like the regional office in Denver, ADL's Boulder satellite office focuses on ADL's mission to "stop the defamation of the Jewish people-to secure justice and fair treatment to all" by responding to complaints of anti-Semitism, hatred and bigotry; tracking extremist groups; assisting and training law enforcement; bringing ADL's A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute anti-bias education programs to schools, businesses and community groups; and striving to preserve religious freedom for all.

Stein

"I look forward to continuing and increasing the scope of ADL's important work in Boulder," Stein said. "We have an amazing cadre of devoted lay leaders and together we will work proactively to fulfill ADL's mission, fighting anti-Semitism and advocating for those who experience discrimination, hatred and bigotry."

After graduating from Brandeis University with a B.A. in political science, Stein became involved with ADL in Seattle where she was working as an instructional design consultant. She participated in ADL's Glass Partners-In-Leadership Institute, a young leadership program, and later joined the Board of ADL's Pacific Northwest Region in Seattle.

As a Regional Board member and active volunteer, her passion for ADL's work and mission grew and led her to become Assistant Regional Director for ADL's Central Pacific Office in San Francisco.

"ADL became such an integral part of my life that it only made sense to work for the organization that closely aligns with my personal beliefs," Stein said

In San Francisco, Stein focused on Jewish institutional security, educating law enforcement about hate crimes and extremism, addressing anti-Semitism, and responding to anti-Semitic and other hateful incidents.

ADL's Boulder Steering Committee is composed of Board members, graduates of ADL's Glass Partners-In-Leadership Institute, and lay leaders. Committee members include: Chair, Sara-Jane Cohen; Community Relations Co-Chairs Bill Cohen and Jim Brantz; Campus Relations Co-Chairs Sid Fox and Bob Schulzinger; Schools Committee Chair Jerry Pinsker; Boulder Young Leadership Circle Co-Chairs Juli Friedman-Peremel and Johanna Kurt; and Fran Blum, Madeline Cohen, Amy Divine,  Sheryl Cardozo, Audrey Fishman Franklin, Ardee Imerman, David Gorodetzky, Barbara Gould, Helayne Jones, Herta Hess Kahn, Cynthia "Chaya" Major, Clyde McKenzie, Ron Peremel, Jared Polis, Mark Read, Mike Ritter, Mihky Ritter, Carol Salter, and Brandon Shaffer.

ADL's Regional Director Bruce H. DeBoskey (second from left) spoke at a "Rally Against Hate Crimes" sponsored by the Interfaith Alliance and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper (at left) on May 3 at the City and County Building.

The rally was organized to show local support for the national Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007, passed earlier that day by the U.S. House of Representatives, that would give the federal government additional jurisdiction over bias-motivated crimes and give local law enforcement resources to combat hate crimes.

State Expands Colorado's Employment Nondiscrimination Law to Include Sexual Orientation

The 2007 Colorado General Assembly passed Senate Bill 25, which added prohibitions against workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and religion. Colorado state law already bars employers from making hiring, firing or demotion decisions based on disability, race, gender or age. ADL Board member Daniel Calisher expressed ADL's support of the bill by testifying at the Colorado House Judiciary Committee hearing and the Colorado Senate Committee hearing. The bill now awaits Gov. Bill Ritter's signature.

More than 1,200 Attend ADL's 26th Annual Governor's Holocaust Remembrance Program

ADL's National Director Abraham H. Foxman was the keynote speaker for the Mountain States Regional office's 26th Annual Governor Holocaust Remembrance Program on April 17th, which was attended by more than 1,200 people.

In addition to Foxman's address and a meaningful candle-lighting ceremony memorializing the victims and honoring the survivors of the Holocaust, led by Rabbi Bernard R. Gerson and Cantor Regina Y. Heit, Governor Bill Ritter Jr. urged the diverse audience to not be silent and indifferent to hatred, bigotry and racism.

The program was chaired by ADL Board member Peggy Goldman, and was made possible by the generous support of Coors Brewing Company, the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado, HealthONE Rose Medical Center, and MDC/Richmond American Homes Foundation.

ADL Condemns Alleged Pueblo Hate Crime

Responding to press reports of allegations that a Pueblo high school student was attacked and beaten because of his sexual orientation, ADL condemned bias-motivated violence and applauded the Pueblo Police Department for its quick and responsive actions investigating this incident as a bias-motivated crime on April 12.

"Hate crimes are message crimes," said Bruce H. DeBoskey, ADL's Mountain States Regional Director. "Perpetrators of hate crimes send a message to their victims – and everyone else who shares the victim's characteristics – that minorities are not welcome or safe. Our communities must unite and send the opposite message loud and clear – that all people, of any color, sexual orientation, gender, ability, religion or ethnicity, are welcome, safe, protected and included in our society. Colorado is no place for hate."

Responding to Bias in the Aftermath of Hate

I
n the aftermath of the tragic shooting rampage at Virginia Tech, extremists and white supremacists have focused on the killer's immigrant status and South Korean ethnicity in an attempt to blame Asian Americans, immigrants and others for the killings. While such efforts have largely failed in the general society, isolated incidents of harassment have prompted concerns about a potential backlash against Asians and others.

ADL offers resources and materials to assist in responding to questions raised by children in the aftermath of hate:

  • Interdisciplinary lessons for Pre-K-12th grade classrooms
  • Resources and tips for parents
  • Guidelines for teachers to creating classrooms of respect and inclusion

Recent high-profile episodes of public figures in the hot seat because of racist, homophobic, sexist or anti-Semitic remarks have once again brought attention to the power of words. Such incidents, however, are not isolated to those with fame and power. On a daily basis people hear and sometimes use words and phrases that demean or ridicule others.

Find out what you can do to challenge biased language with ADL's new resource "What did you just say?" It includes:

  • Strategies for responding effectively to bigoted words, jokes and slurs
  • Guidelines for examining one's own biases, attitudes and behaviors
  • Suggestions for achieving bias-free communication
  • Activities and curricular resources for educators
