2007 VINNIK FELLOWSHIP FOR ADVANCED STUDY IN ISRAEL...
|
The Center for Judaic Studies is accepting applications for the 2007 Vinnik Fellowship for Advanced Study in Israel.
The Dr. Irwin E. Vinnik Fellowship provides scholarship funds to individuals who would benefit from educational travel and research in Israel. Students who are currently enrolled in programs in Judaic Studies, Religion, Human and/or Civil Rights or Interfaith study or who are pursuing ministerial or rabbinic degrees are encouraged to apply. The Vinnik Family's desire is to honor Dr. Vinnik's love of education and his dream of bridging the gap between the United States and Israel and between Jew, Muslim and Christian. The family hopes that recipients of the Fellowship will learn about Israel, Judaism and religious differences and pass on the knowledge and understanding gained during their stay, thereby enhancing the important task of interfaith awareness.
Please refer to http://www.du.edu/cjs/vinnik_scholarships.html for more information on the requirements for the application or contact Sarah Pessin, Interim Director of the Center for Judaic Studies at spessin@du.edu. All applications are due January 31, 2007.

Divan
(USA, 2003/English, Yiddish and Hungarian with English subtitles/77 mins.)
Directed by Pearl Gluck
Special guest: director Pearl Gluck
Pearl Gluck is a woman on a mission. She wants a couch. Not any old couch, mind you, but an ornate, Hungarian, turn-of-the century couch upon which many an esteemed Hasidic rabbi had purportedly slept during their travels. On her mission to retrieve this couch from its rural Hungarian locale, Pearl befriends distant ex-Communist cousins, a wry Hasidic furniture restorer, astute formerly Orthodox Jews, and ultimately her father, who just wants her to marry a nice Jewish boy.
We are excited to welcome Pearl Gluck for a post screening discussion and reception. Divan is a Hasidic tale five years in the making and Gluck's debut feature documentary, developed with the assistance of the Sundance Institute. The first person to receive the Yiddish Fulbright to Hungary, her work has garnered support of arts organizations throughout the country including the New York State Council on the Arts, Eva Eastman Fund, and the National Foundation for Jewish Culture. She was also the co-director of the award-winning short, Great Balls of Fire.

Love, Iranian-American Style
(USA,2005/English/63 mins)
Directed by Tanaz Eshaghian
A twenty-something Iranian-American struggles with her family's not-so-subtle pressure to find a husband and settle down. To her community, marriage symbolizes stability and cultural continuity. To Eshaghian, marriage is a trap. A classic and bittersweet story of immigrant struggles to adapt to a new homeland. Smart and savvy.
Join us for a post screening discussion with Laura Merage of the Merage Foundation. Laura Merage was born in Tehran, Iran and immigrated to Los Angeles at the age of fifteen. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California and her Masters Degree in Art from New York University.
Laura is an artist/photographer with works in public and private collections nationally and internationally. Her work keeps her traveling for shows as well as inspiration. She keeps studios in Denver, Hawaii and Israel. Laura is married to David Merage and through their foundation, they support many community organizations in the United States, Israel and other countries.
