JOIN LEAH GARRETT ON LAMED SHAPIRO: THE CROSS AND OTHER STORIES

Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 7 P.M.
Singer Gallery at the Mizel Center for Arts and Culture
350 S. Dahlia Street, Denver

Lamed Shapiro (1878-1948), who was born in Ukraine and came to the United States in 1905, personifies the struggles of Jewish modernists adrift in a changing culture. In Shapiro's writings, violence is grotesque and horrific. It brings in its wake a moral wastland, and gives rise to a chain of violence. Suffering strips people of their character; similarly, war is portrayed as brutal rather than heroic.

Leah Garrett, an associate professor of English Literature and Judaic Studies at University of Denver, is the editor of a new book from Yale University Press about Shapiro's life and work. She has published extensively on Yiddish, American and Hebrew Jewish literature. Garret will discuss the ways in which the Jewish experience of the violence of war is both unique and universal. Her new book will be available to purchase.

Cost is $5/general admission; $3/students & seniors.

"Lane's colorful depiction is so real, his characters so well developed, that you can't help but be moved. He uses hip-hop beats to paint a vibrant portrait of life in this area that's both touching and disturbing, inspiring one minute, and utterly heartbreaking the next…" ~The San Francisco Examiner
