CJS WELCOMES THE CHAIR OF JEWISH STUDIES AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY, SHAUL MAGID...
|
"Jewish Renewal in Contemporary America: Negotiating the Boundaries of Legitimacy"
This lecture will focus on the question of "legitimacy" more generally through the lens of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi's recent Hebrew writings. Professor Magid will explore the tool of translation - both from an American idiom to the language of the "study house" and from the "study house" to counter-cultural idiom of American spirituality - as a subversive, even heretical, tool with which to revive the past by radically transforming it. Legitimacy is not confirmed but constructed through the manipulative - and creative, act of translation.
Tuesday, April 24, 2007, 7 P.M.
University of Denver, Gottesfeld Room
Daniel L. Ritchie Center, 4th Floor
2201 E. Asbury Ave., Denver
