"Beyond the Pale: Jews in Tsarist Russia"
When and where did the Jews become a modern people? In contrast to the image of the Russian Empire as the place from which Jews fled, this public lecture will highlight Russian Jewry’s role as an incubator of reform and innovation. By examining Jewish life, beyond the Pale - literally outside the residential areas designated for Jews, but also outside their inherited social roles - we will explore the distinctly modern path carved out by the world’s largest Jewish community over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
