CJS WRAPS UP THE "JEWS ON THE MOVE" SERIES WITH AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR, BARBARA KIRSHENBLATT-GIMBLETT...
|
"Old Histories, New Itineraries: Creating the Museum of the History of Polish Jews"
Professor Kirshenblatt-Gimblett's lecture will explore the challenges of creating the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, which will open in 2010, in post-Communist Poland. Dedicated to telling the story of a millennium of Jewish civilization in Polish lands, this museum will offer an itinerary to its visitors that differ from what Jewish visitors to Poland typically plan. As 90% of Poland's Jews perished during the Holocaust, that Jewish visitors to Poland today have generally confined their itinerary to sites related to the Shoah is not surprising. Where will the itinerary posed by the museum take them and what encounters will it engender?
Tuesday, May 15, 2007, 7 P.M.
University of Denver, Gottesfeld Room
Daniel L. Ritchie Center, 4th Floor
2201 E. Asbury Ave., Denver
Join Professor Kirshenblatt-Gimblett for a unique and intimate learning opportunity as he leads series of Rimon: Master Classes on
"Changing the Itinerary: Jewish Museums and Heritage Travel in the New Europe"
This two-day seminar will examine how Jewish museums and historic Holocaust sites balance their relationship to contemporary Jewish communities throughout Europe with that of Jewish tourists from around the world – especially those from the United States and Israel. Paying attention not only to remember those who died and how they died, but also to honor their memory by paying attention to how they lived and the civilization they created. The most ambitious recent efforts include the Jewish Museum in Berlin and the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, scheduled to open in Warsaw in 2010.
