Jewish Ethical Wills and Letters

Tuesday, November 27, 7:30-9:00 pm at Congregation Bonai Shalom

Whether or not you have children or a regular will, this workshop is for you. We will look at and discuss some traditional Jewish texts and then begin work on our own ethical wills. Bring a pencil/pen and paper or your laptop computer.

The ethical will or letter is a document usually containing a bequest, not of money and property (although these can be included), but of personal information about the author's life, dreams, hope, and wishes-an ethical legacy of how to live a good and decent life. Originating perhaps in the Torah and spreading to the New Testament, the tradition of ethical wills has become part of the heritage of Jews of all stripes, of Christians, and of many other people as well, religious, spiritual, or none of the above. We will look at some traditional and modern ethical wills and then begin work on our own ethical will, which eventually could be a letter, a more formal document, a video or film, artwork, audiorecording, multimedia, or other medium. Texts will be in English, and no knowledge of Hebrew is necessary. However, some Hebrew may also be provided. Free for CBS members and $5 for nonmembers.

I hope to see you here.
