AT PARDES LEVAVOTThank You!Yom Kippur was a powerful experience again this year at Pardes Levavot. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare, lead services, celebrate and clean up.Thank you to all the families who joined us in the Sukkah to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot. Remember, it is a mitzvah to be joyful during this week! Thank you to Reb Victor and Reb Nadya for hosting a tea for new and prospective members this past Sunday. It was a wonderful gathering as we look forward to bringing new people into the Pardes Levavot family. Thanks also to Lisa Trank and Jack Greene who donated the tea, cookies and fruit in honor of the naming of their daughters on Yom Kippur: Mila Shoshanah (Mila), Ashira Miryam (Maedèe) and Rena Chava (Julea). And thanks to Vicki Penna who contributed wonderful baked goodies. Events This WeekAn Inconvenient Truth“See to it that you do not destroy my world, for there is no one to repair it after you.”Midrash Ecclesiastes Rabbah 7:13 Haver: Boulder’s Rabbinic Fellowship presents A Special Sukkot Showing of An Inconvenient Truth. Monday, Oct. 9, 6:30 p.m. Boulder JCC, $5 donation requested. Sukkot is a time when we honor our interdependency with nature. What more fitting time than Sukkot to educate ourselves about the global climate crisis humanity now faces. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction due to global warming. Please join all Boulder-area Jewish congregations as the Boulder Rabbis’ Fellowship presents the much-lauded film, An Inconvenient Truth. This film offers a passionate and inspirational look at Al Gore’s fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it. We will follow the movie with a presentation and discussion of practical next steps we can take as individuals and a community to begin to reverse this trend and live more responsibly. Prior to the film, we will have snacks and brief rabbinic teaching in the sukkah. Tikkun Olam: Repairing The WorldTell McDonald's to Ensure Fair Wages and Working Conditions for Farm Workers!"You shall not abuse a needy and destitute laborer.. but you must pay him his wages on the same day, for he is needy and urgently depends on it." (Deuteronomy 24:14-15)Tomato pickers for Florida-based tomato companies earn 40-50 cents for every 32-lb bucket of tomatoes they pick, a rate that has not risen significantly since 1978. A worker must pick 2 TONS of tomatoes to earn $50 in one day. Farm workers often work 10-12 hour days with no overtime pay, no right to organize, no sick days or other benefits. There is hope for change. In March of 2005, the CIW and Taco Bell reached an historic agreement to directly increase farm worker wages and enforce a code of conduct for human rights in Taco Bell's tomato supply chain. Since then, the CIW has asked McDonald's to take similar steps in its own tomato supply chain. Instead of doing so, McDonald's has responded with public relations schemes that do not make meaningful change in the fields. Take action- YOU can encourage McDonald's to do the right thing! www.pardeslevavot.org/announcements/mcd-tomato.html Righteous work for these Awesome DaysI am writing to urge you to participate in our new Phone Home campaign! It's a campaign to mobilize fair-minded people everywhere in the fight against the anti-LGBT constitutional amendments that will be on the November ballot in eight states: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin. If you come from or know anyone in any of these states - and surely you do - then you can take action today.Just go to the campaign Web site, www.PhoneHome2006.org, where you'll find all the tools you need to quickly and easily contact your relatives, friends, classmates and former co-workers in these states and tell them you need them to do the right thing on November 7. You can also donate to the state campaigns through this site. Your LGBT community members back home need all the help they can get so take action today. Please also forward this message to everyone you know. There's no time to waste. Thanks for doing your part to stand up to bigotry and intolerance. Sincerely, Matt Foreman Executive Director National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc. ‘Crazy For You’ and Habitat! The Board of Flatirons Habitat for Humanity invites all of you to join us on Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at the Boulder Dinner Theater for the new Gershwin musical, “Crazy For You.” The event will include a silent auction where guests can do some early holiday shopping. Because proceeds from the auction will be used to purchase building materials, shoppers will actually be making two gifts for the price of one.Several area faith communities participated in last year’s event and had a terrific time. We hope that your congregation will plan to join us this year. The ticket price is $65 per person. Seating is on a first-come first-served basis, so call 303-447-3787 (ext 30) as soon as possible to reserve your seats. You’ll enjoy great food and entertainment, and at the same time support Habitat for Humanity’s work. October is also Habitat month at Vitamin Cottage. This month Vitamin Cottage will match shoppers’ donations DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR, up to $50,000, toward a “Green Built” Habitat home in Boulder. They have also joined the Grocery Coupon Habitat Effort. For more info and to purchase coupons, contact Flatirons Habitat at (303) 447-3787. B'nai-Mitzvah tutoring for all levels of students or basic Judaic tutoring for those who are just curious and hungry to learn more.I have also been drumming (middle-eastern and afro-cuban hand drums) on-and-off for 5 years now and I am now a full-time drummer for Pardes Levavot in Boulder and will offer hand drumming lessons to those interested. I will offer this either privately or in groups. And for those interested, I am a trained and ordained Jr. Maggid under Reb Zalman. I studied with Rabbi Daniel Lev, Reb Zalman, Yehudis Fishman and others and will offer private tutoring in the sacred art of Maggidut. Maggidut is the ability to learn a story, decipher it's meaning, whether obvious or hidden, memorize the story and then present it in a way that displays that meaning for everyone to understand. Maggidut is not limited to story telling. Being able to present your own thoughts and feelings through public speaking, writing, or other venues is included. Maggidut is just the way to delve into the deeper spiritual meaning and then help people understand what it is that you want them to know.
