Marching with King:
Abraham Joshua Heschel Remembered
Join Menorah – Talking
Pictures Film Series for
Marching with King: “Abraham Joshua Heschel Remembered,” a short
film followed by personal reflections by speakers Rabbi Victor Gross
and Rabbi
Gavriel Goldfeder, Saturday, January 20,
7p.m. at the Boulder JCC. A refugee from Germany who became
professor
of
Jewish ethics and mysticism at the Jewish Theological Seminary, the
late Rabbi
Abraham Joshua Heschel combined deep scholarship with a strong moral
passion
which led him to march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to oppose
the
Vietnam War. The 60-minute documentary “Abraham Joshua Heschel
Remembered” begins with a discussion by scholars Ismar Schorsch and
Cornel West, who focus on Heschel's efforts regarding Black-Jewish
relations.
In an interview filmed shortly before his death in 1972, Heschel
defined
humanity's deepest passion as "a craving for the meaning of
existence." Rabbi Victor Gross was a
student of Professor Heschel in the late 60's and had a personal
relationship with him and his family and paid a partial debt to his
influence
by writing his Ph.D. on him. Rabbi Gavriel Goldfeder was also deeply
influenced by Heschel’s teachings. RSVP to Kathryn@boulderjcc.org or
