Tikkun Olam: Repairing the World

Help Farm Workers in California

ALEPH's Sacred Foods Project holds out fair and just treatment of farm workers as one of its fundamental principles. Please consider supporting the farm workers in California who will be suffering greatly as a result of this year's freeze. The news is full of stories about the freeze and how California's multimillion dollar citrus crop is being hit hard.  The harsh January freeze that ravaged California citrus also damaged strawberries, avocados and possibly other crops.  It could also ravage the lives of an estimated 20,000 farm workers and their families in citrus alone. While growers are assessing the situation, the United Farm Workers is already hearing from citrus workers who are out of work. Workers have told us they think it will be almost a total loss.

News reports talk about the negative effects of this disaster on growers. However, growers can apply for relief under emergency declarations and many have insurance to cover some of their losses. There is little or no aid for the farm workers who pick the crops. Please help the UFW fight for these farm workers.  Contact California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein. Thank the governor for calling a state of emergency and ask Sen. Feinstein to work to get the federal government to declare a national emergency, as she did after the 1998-1999 freeze. Ask them to make sure emergency assistance provides unemployment insurance; rent or mortgage assistance; utilities assistance; and organized food distribution to farm workers and their stricken families. When the assistance comes in, the UFW will be there to get it to all those who need it - just as we did back after the last freeze. Every e-mail sent makes a difference. Please help us spread the word about this campaign.  Visit the UFW's "Freeze page" to see the latest news clips and press releases.

Can Tefilin help us to pray? How can Tefilin contribute to our spiritual practice? Come! Learn and experience how Tefilin can help you to connect heart, mind and soul to divine energy.

The Cave of Reconciliation

In the Southern Judea region, 3,050 feet above sea level, lies a city; some know it as Hebron, others Al-Khalil. In this city sits a cave with three names: the Tomb of the Patriarchs, Ma'arat H'Machpelah, and al-Haram al-Ibrahimi. The cave is said to house the remains of a man and his family. The name can be pronounced Abraham, Avraham, or Ibrahim, but the man is the same.

Participate in the 2007 Jewish Community Study

Help Us Map Out Our Future. No matter how you are Jewish, the Community Study is about you! Being Jewish is personal. It means something different to each of us. We want to know your perspective. A major study of all seven counties in the Denver/Boulder Jewish community will soon be conducted. A survey of this depth has not been performed in ten years.

The objective of the study is to keep Jewish life meaningful in a changing world. Your participation is important and greatly appreciated. Your answers will help us assess the service needs of our growing community in order to create a strong, vibrant environment that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Beginning in late February, professional interviewers will be calling thousands of randomly selected Jewish and non-Jewish homes in the seven-county Denver/Boulder Metro Area. If you receive the call, please
answer the phone. This study is being co-chaired by Nancy Gart and Rob Klugman on behalf of the agencies, synagogues and schools in the Jewish community. INFORMATION: www.jewishcolorado.org/2007study. Telephone numbers will be selected anonymously and your answers will be anonymous. Interviewers will not know or ask for your name, address or any other personal information. There will be no solicitation of funds. Survey results will be released in summer and fall 2007. The study is being conducted by Ukeles Associates, Inc., managed by Allied Jewish Federation of Colorado, and is made possible through a generous grant from Rose Community Foundation.
