Making Parenting A Spiritual Practice

A very special class at Elat Chayyim, August 20-26 - Family Week, taught by Rabbis Victor and Nadya Gross.

Children come into this world bearing the wisdom gained in lifetimes lived before and the memory of God breathing life into them once again. Their greatest gift to us is to open our eyes to the unlimited potential and purity of the universe. Our greatest gift to them is to overcome our controlling need to shape them in our image.

The spiritual practice of parenting seeks to create a safe, loving and supportive environment where these young beings can grow in conscious partnership with their Divine intention. When we learn to parent in this way, our homes are defined by love, authenticity and meaning.

Come learn this practice, sourced in our rabbinic and mystical tradition, and find new joy and purpose in your relationships with your children.

The 11th Hour

Leonardo DiCaprio's new film, "The 11th Hour" - his feature documentary on the global environmental crisis - is due out very soon. I am working on the film with The Visioneering Group for Warner Independent Pictures and I'd like to invite you to attend the following screening in Denver (with no theaters in Boulder right now, no showings in Boulder - it is worth the drive! Carpooling is the way to go):

Tuesday, August 7, 7:30 pm, Landmark Esquire, 590 Downing Street, Denver
Tuesday, August 14, 7:30 pm, Landmark Mayan, 110 Broadway, Denver

This is a powerful film, perhaps even stronger than "An Inconvenient Truth," and I wanted you to be able to see it, if you can make it. I also invite you to visit the film's website at: www.11thhourfilm.com as well as the 11th Hour Community site www.11thhouraction.com. Please email me with any questions at ltrank@comcast.net. Thanks, Lisa Trank

Uganda

My daughter Rachel Zaslow has written a stirring account of her six weeks in Uganda at brooklynmidwife.blogspot.com. Our Havurah has established a fund and collected over $600 for the convent school from where Rachel worked, to rescue girls who have been brutalized and raped. Without even asking, folks at Kallah spontaneously handed me checks and cash adding an additional $200 to our gifts. A $50 donation pays for the room, board, and tuition for one girl for one year. Send tax deductible donations of $18, $50, or more, to the Havurah and mark ‘Uganda Fund’ in the memo to Havurah Shir Hadash. PO Box 1262, Ashland, Oregon 97520. I have never heard of a donation opportunity that is more direct in its impact on saving life. I got to speak with Sister Rosemary several times during Kallah and she is truly amazing. I told her that our small gift was a gift from the Jewish people and she broke out weeping in gratitude. By the way, Rachel taught the nuns Hazan Jack Kessler's version of the "Brikh Rakhmana" blessing after meals. So, there is a Catholic convent of African nuns in Gulu, Uganda who are now chanting a Renewal melody after their evening meals. How cool is that? -- Rabbi David Zaslow

A little boy was attending his first wedding. After the ceremony, his cousin asked him, "How many women can a man marry?"
"Sixteen," the boy responded.
His cousin was amazed that he had an answer so quickly. "How do you know that?"
"Easy," the little boy said, "All you have to do is add it up, like the Rabbi said: 4 better, 4 worse, 4 richer, 4 poorer."
