This Week
Blessing the
Sun and Burning the Hametz
A
Special Community-Wide gathering at 10am on April 8th at Bonai Shalom
Haver,
Boulder's Rabbinic Fellowship, is happy to announce a community wide
gathering at 10am on April 8th, for the annual burning of Hametz before
Pesach, and the once in 28 year mitzvah of Birkat HaHamah. We
will recite a blessing and prayer on the occasion of the sun returning
to its original place as it was on the fourth day of creation, followed
by the ritual burning of our physical and spiritual hametz. The sages
tell us that although an individual may say the blessing, it's
preferred and most beautiful performance is with as many people as
possible. We hope that people from across the community will join us on
this auspicious day. May all of our Seders be blessed with meaning,
joy, and gratitude.
Coming Up
Contemplative
Shabbat Service with Rabbi Jeff Roth
Rabbi Jeff Roth
will be in Boulder, introducing his new book: Jewish
Meditation Practices for Everyday Life. Jeff
will lead our Shabbat morning contemplative service. An optional
meditation beginning at 9:15 am will precede the service, which begins
at 10am.
We
will experience a deep celebration of Shabbat that reminds us of the
possibility of bringing our awareness to a meeting of the Divine
Presence in every moment. Davvening will focus on the the kavanot -
the intentions - that we bring to chanting each section of the liturgy.
Jeff will lead these chants, accompanied by his guitar, in a manner
that allows us to fully drop into the mode of connection to the Divine
that every part of the liturgy provides.
Jewish
Meditation Practices for Everyday Life
Sunday, April 19,
noon - 5:00 pm
$18 donation encouraged
Bring a meditation cushion if you prefer to sit on the floor.
Rabbi Jeff
Roth will introduce his new book, Jewish
Meditation Practices for Everyday Life, a book about happiness and about
waking up in order to see our own lives clearly. The
workshop will include some teaching on Jewish meditation, and introduce
practices designed to open the heart of compassion. The workshop would
also include question and answer periods, and a number of periods of
silent practice. Rabbi Roth will provide instructions for meditation
practice. The silence of this practice allows for a settling of the
mind as well as an in depth look at ones experience of life in each
moment. In meeting the present moment, the opportunity to meet the
Divine Presence manifests.

A Jewish family invited their gentile neighbors for holiday dinner. The
first course was set in front of them and the Jewish couple announced,
"This is matzoh ball soup."
On seeing the two large matzoh balls in the soup, the gentile man was
hesitant to taste this strange looking brew. Gently, the Jewish couple
pressed the gentile man. "Just have a taste. If you don't like it, you
don't have to finish it."
Finally he agrees. He digs his spoon in, first picking up a small piece
of matzoh ball with some soup in the spoon, and tasting it gingerly.
The usual 'mmmmmmm' sound can be heard coming from somewhere deep in
his chest, and he quickly finished the soup. "That was delicious," he
said. "Can you eat any other parts of the matzoh?"
