AT
PARDES LEVAVOT
Dear Pardes
Levavot,
We wanted to thank you all for your incredible support of Chloe’s Bat
Mitzvah. Part of the joy of the day, and it was a truly joyous day,
came from all the willing hands and hearts pitching in to make it
happen. We especially wanted to thank the Sher and Berkelhammer
families for their support right from the start down to the kitchen
scrubbing at the end. As Fred said, it felt right to have the service
and sumptuous Oneg Shabbat "at home". Jim Wright was there when we
needed to know nuts and bolts, and he valiantly wrestled with the
transitional sound system so that we could all hear the service. And,
of course, Reb Victor and Reb Nadya helped Chloe co-create a service
that made her feel comfortable, present and happy to be there. She
couldn’t have wished for more. As our little congregation works
diligently to identify its place, for each one of us and in the greater
community, we should know that an event as wonderful as a Bat Mitzvah
could never happen without a true congregation. Each one of us, by
being a part of Pardes, helps form the community that Chloe recognizes
now as her own. That is perhaps the greatest gift she has received for
her Bat Mitzvah.
Gratefully,
Mark, Ellen, Chloe and Susannah Rossier

Studying Torah is an act of love, especially studying the text in
Hebrew. This love is what can help us to find meaning even when we are
studying passages which are challenging, and maintain an awareness of
wholeness of the text.
This class will focus on methods of interpretation, using the lens of
the PaRDeS, the acronym of Pshat, Remez, Drash, Sod -- the fourfold
method of textual interpretation which opens the text, adds the
spiritual dimension and provides a holistic approach to text learning.
We will learn how to read Torah in a spiritual way, and introduce
classical and modern commentators.
Final decision on the time will be made by the registrants and the
teacher together. The course is limited to 12 students and we must have
a minimum of 7.
For registration and more information call 303.440.1020 or email: ori.har@comcast.net

Interfaith
Spiritual Pilgrimage to Israel and Palestine
Our own
Rabbis, Nadya and Victor Gross, together with Imam
Jihad Turk and co-founder of Salaam Shalom Educational Foundation,
Shepha Schneirsohn Vainstein will be leading a moving and soulful
journey this Spring (March 21 - April 1, 2010) that will begin with
inspiring visits to communities of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian
families transforming polarized societies in Israel through the Waldorf
approach to education. With a spirit of Abrahamic unity and devotion we
will visit Jewish, Christian, and Muslim holy places in Israel and
Palestine. We will learn from respected teachers, pray with religious
leaders, participate in peacemaking circles, and meet with inspiring
activists who envision a world based on respect and cooperation. We
will celebrate an interfaith Passover Seder in Jerusalem filled with
storytelling and song. Our pilgrimage will conclude with a ceremony for
peace at Rabin Square. We welcome those exploring Israel for the first
time as well as experienced travelers.

It’s Sunday and 12 year old Benny has just finished his Bar Mitzvah
class and is getting ready to go home. But he’s not feeling too good
because earlier, during the mid morning break, he saw the rabbi’s gold
watch on a desk and put it in his pocket while no one was looking. Now
he’s very worried that he’ll be found out. In fact he’s so worried that
he decides to go see the rabbi straight away, before he goes home.
"Hello Benny," says the rabbi, "and what can I do for you?"
"I want to own up about something, rabbi," replies Benny. "I stole a
gold watch."
"Oy yoy yoy Benny," says the rabbi, looking very worried, "that’s
really not a nice thing to have done. Such an act is strictly
forbidden, as you very well know. You must give it back to its owner
immediately."
"Do YOU want it, rabbi?" asks Benny.
"No Benny, I don’t want it," says the rabbi, "you must give it back to
its owner, as I just told you."
"But rabbi," says Benny, "the owner doesn’t want it."
"Well in that case," says the rabbi, "you can keep it."
