Getting Involved

Torah in Hebrew - Torah B'Evrit by Rabbi Ori Har-DiGennaro

Dates: Sundays, 17 January, 2010 to 7 March, 2010; No class on Purim, 28 February, 2010
Tuition: $140
Location: 3982 Arbol Court, Boulder, CO

Studying Torah is an act of love, especially studying the text in Hebrew. This love is what can help us to find meaning even when we are studying passages which are challenging, and maintain an awareness of wholeness of the text.

This class will focus on methods of interpretation, using the lens of the PaRDeS, the acronym of Pshat, Remez, Drash, Sod -- the fourfold method of textual interpretation which opens the text, adds the spiritual dimension and provides a holistic approach to text learning.

We will learn how to read Torah in a spiritual way, and introduce classical and modern commentators.

Final decision on the time will be made by the registrants and the teacher together. The course is limited to 12 students and we must have a minimum of 7.

For registration and more information call 303.440.1020 or email: ori.har@comcast.net

Interfaith Spiritual Pilgrimage to Israel and Palestine

Our own Rabbis, Nadya and Victor Gross, together with Imam Jihad Turk and co-founder of Salaam Shalom Educational Foundation, Shepha Schneirsohn Vainstein will be leading a moving and soulful journey this Spring (March 21 - April 1, 2010) that will begin with inspiring visits to communities of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian families transforming polarized societies in Israel through the Waldorf approach to education. With a spirit of Abrahamic unity and devotion we will visit Jewish, Christian, and Muslim holy places in Israel and Palestine. We will learn from respected teachers, pray with religious leaders, participate in peacemaking circles, and meet with inspiring activists who envision a world based on respect and cooperation. We will celebrate an interfaith Passover Seder in Jerusalem filled with storytelling and song. Our pilgrimage will conclude with a ceremony for peace at Rabin Square. We welcome those exploring Israel for the first time as well as experienced travelers.

Peter, a Coca Cola salesman, returns home from his assignment in Israel very disappointed. He immediately goes to see his boss.

"So Peter," asks his boss, "why weren't you successful with the Israelis?"

"When I got sent to Israel to increase our Coca Cola sales," replies Peter, "I was confident that I would be able to succeed even though I couldn’t speak Hebrew."

"So what did you do to get round the language problem?" asks his boss.

"I decided to convey our message to the Israelis via a Picture Poster campaign," replies Peter, "and after a week of effort, I came up with the Israeli Poster. Although having no text on it, this poster was able to strongly put across our message using just three high definition images. These images, when viewed sequentially, clearly told the Coca Cola story."

"So what were these three images, Peter?" asks his boss.

"The left hand picture - the first image," replies Peter, "shows a man lying in the hot desert sand, totally exhausted and close to fainting. The middle picture - the second image, shows the man drinking Coca Cola. And the right hand picture - the third image, shows the man totally refreshed and happy."

"So what did you then do?" asks the boss.

"We printed tens of thousands of the posters," replies Peter, "and got them pasted up all over Israel."

"That should have worked very well for us," says the boss. "So what went wrong, Peter?"

"I didn’t realize," replies Peter, "that Hebrew is read from right to left."
